Quick answer: The Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Simhastha Kumbh begins on 31 October 2026 with the flag-hoisting ceremony and runs 21 months until 24 July 2028. The three Amrit Snans (Shahi Snans) fall on 2 August, 31 August, and 11–12 September 2027. A 2-day Nashik–Trimbakeshwar trip costs roughly ₹4,000–₹15,000 per person — expect 3–5× hotel prices on the main snan day.

What is the Simhastha Kumbh, and why is Nashik's different?

Every 12 years, four Indian cities host the Kumbh Mela — Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik. The legend is the same everywhere: drops of amrit (nectar of immortality) fell from the gods' pitcher during the Samudra Manthan, sanctifying these four places.

Nashik's Simhastha is different in two ways that actually matter to a traveller:

  1. The river is the Godavari, not the Ganga. The main bathing happens at Ramkund in Nashik (Panchavati area) and Kushavarta in Trimbakeshwar, 30 km away.
  2. It is a dual-centre Kumbh. Nashik's Ramkund hosts the Vaishnava akharas; Trimbakeshwar's Kushavarta hosts the Shaiva akharas — and Trimbakeshwar is also one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. You effectively get a Jyotirlinga darshan and a Kumbh snan in one trip.

The 2027 edition is unusual: a rare Trikhand Yog (astrologers call it a once-in-75-years configuration) stretches the festival to 21 months — 31 October 2026 to 24 July 2028 — instead of the usual 12.

The full timeline — flag hoisting to flag lowering

Date Event
31 Oct 2026, 12:02 PM Dhwajarohan (flag hoisting) — Ramkund, Nashik + Kushavarta, Trimbakeshwar, simultaneously. President Droupadi Murmu expected; 6,000 tribal devotees perform a special Godavari Aarti.
Nov 2026 – Jul 2027 Buildup phase — roads, tent cities, Sadhu Gram completed (deadline Mar 2027)
2 Aug 2027 First Amrit Snan (Somvati Amavasya)
31 Aug 2027 Main Amrit Snan (Shravan Amavasya) — the biggest day
11 Sep 2027 Third Amrit Snan — Vaishnava akharas, Ramkund Nashik
12 Sep 2027 Third Amrit Snan — Shaiva akharas, Kushavarta Trimbakeshwar
24 Jul 2028 Flag lowering — festival ends

When should you go? An honest framework

Most guides just list dates. Here's the trade-off nobody spells out:

Time window Crowd (1–5) Hotel cost vs normal Snan access Best for
Flag hoisting, 31 Oct 2026 2 1.2× Ceremony, no snan Culture lovers, photographers
Winter 2026–27 (Nov–Feb) 1 1× Peaceful Ramkund/Kushavarta darshan Families, elderly, first-timers
Pre-snan, Jul 2027 3 1.5–2× Buildup energy Planners checking logistics
First snan, 2 Aug 2027 4 2–3× Full snan spectacle Devotees who dislike peak chaos
Main snan, 31 Aug 2027 5 3–5× The grand spectacle Once-in-a-lifetime seekers
Third snan, 11–12 Sep 2027 4 2–3× Two-centre experience Those who want both Nashik + Trimbakeshwar

Our honest take: if this is your first Kumbh, go in winter 2026–27. You'll bathe in the same Godavari, see the same temples, pay normal prices, and actually be able to walk. Come back for 31 August 2027 only if you want the spectacle and can plan months ahead.

Critical rule for snan days: on Amrit Snan days, 3:00–11:30 AM is akhara-exclusive at the ghats. General pilgrims bathe after 12 PM. Don't arrive at Ramkund at 6 AM expecting to enter the water — you'll wait behind barricades.

What will it cost? (October 2026 prices)

For a 2-day Nashik + Trimbakeshwar day-trip circuit, per person:

Budget Comfort Premium
Stay (2 nights, Nashik) ₹1,200 (dharamshala) ₹4,000 (3-star) ₹9,000 (4-star/riverside)
Food (2 days) ₹600 ₹1,500 ₹3,000
Local transport ₹800 (shared) ₹2,000 (auto/taxi) ₹4,000 (private cab)
Trimbakeshwar darshan Free–₹200 ₹500 (special entry) ₹1,000+
Total ~₹2,600–4,000 ~₹8,000–10,000 ~₹15,000–18,000

Kumbh pricing warning: on the main snan day (31 Aug 2027), Nashik hotel rates historically rise 3–5×. Book the moment dates are confirmed, or stay in Sinnar/Shirdi and day-trip in.

How to reach and where to stay

Reaching Nashik: Nashik Road railway station connects to Mumbai, Delhi, Pune and most metros. Mumbai–Nashik is ~170 km by road (4–5 hrs). The airport is being expanded to 1,000+ passenger capacity for the Kumbh.

Nashik → Trimbakeshwar: 30 km by road — MSRTC buses every 30 min (~₹50), shared jeeps, or private taxi (~₹1,200–1,500 round trip).

Where to stay: - Budget: dharamshalas and ashrams around Panchavati (walk to Ramkund); book through temple trusts, not touts. - Comfort: hotels on College Road / CIDCO — 15 min from Ramkund, calmer. - Kumbh 2027 special: Sadhu Gram and climate-resilient tent cities are being built; NTKMA (the Kumbh authority) will publish bookings — only book through official portals, fake "official" sites mushroom before every Kumbh.

The Digital Kumbh — what tech is coming

Nashik 2027 is being pitched as India's first Digital Kumbh: an AI assistant called 'Kumbhdoot', Digital Twin crowd modelling, facial recognition, a missing-person tracking system, and an Integrated Command & Control Centre. Whether it all works on the ground remains to be seen — Prayagraj 2025's tech had mixed reviews — but the intent is real and the ₹25,000 crore development plan (300+ km of roads, a 77 km ring road, airport expansion) is already underway.

What first-timers get wrong

  1. Arriving at Ramkund at dawn on a snan day expecting to bathe — you'll be behind akhara barricades till noon.
  2. Driving into Nashik on 31 Aug 2027 — there's an 8–12 km no-vehicle ring; parking is at Vilholi, Adgaon and Sinnar with shuttles.
  3. Carrying valuables to the ghat — carry a photocopy of ID, minimal cash, and a waterproof pouch for your phone.
  4. Booking through the first "official" site Google shows — verify it's NTKMA/official. Fake portals are the oldest Kumbh scam.
  5. Ignoring the dual centre — most visitors see only Nashik and miss Trimbakeshwar's Kushavarta, where the Shaiva akharas bathe. Go to both.

Can foreigners attend?

Yes. No special permit is needed for general bathing — the same rules apply as for domestic pilgrims. Dress modestly (cover shoulders and knees at ghats and temples), ask before photographing sadhus and akhara processions, and consider hiring a local guide for snan days — the crowd logistics genuinely need local knowledge.

Costs reviewed October 2026. The Kumbh authority (NTKMA) announces logistics in phases — we'll refresh this guide after the 31 October flag hoisting, in December 2026, and again in April–May 2027 as snan logistics firm up.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Kumbh Mela in 2026?

There is no standalone 2026 Kumbh, but the Nashik Simhastha's flag hoisting happens on 31 October 2026, formally starting a 21-month cycle that runs through July 2028.

What are the Shahi Snan dates of Nashik Kumbh 2027?

The three Amrit Snans are 2 August 2027 (first), 31 August 2027 (main), and 11 September 2027 at Nashik / 12 September 2027 at Trimbakeshwar (third).

Why is the 2027 Simhastha a 21-month Kumbh?

A rare Trikhand Yog — an astrological configuration said to occur once in about 75 years — extends this Simhastha well beyond the usual 12-month cycle.

Can ordinary devotees bathe at Ramkund on Amrit Snan days?

Yes, but only after 12 PM. From 3:00 to 11:30 AM on snan days the ghats are reserved for akharas and their processions.

How is Nashik Kumbh different from Prayagraj?

Nashik's Kumbh sits on the Godavari with the Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga nearby — a Shaiva-Vaishnava dual centre — while Prayagraj's is at the Ganga-Yamuna-Saraswati sangam. Nashik expects around 12 crore devotees vs Prayagraj 2025's roughly 66 crore.

Is it worth visiting during the flag hoisting in October 2026?

Yes if you want the ceremonial opening with manageable crowds and open roads. No if you're coming for the grand snan spectacle — that arrives August–September 2027.
